Artificial Intelligence is a hot topic everywhere, including medical practice. AI has been found in some studies to be as accurate, or even superior, to internal medicine doctors for diagnosis problems. Â
I have used AI engines for business applications and for researching medical management issues, but it cannot help me in an operating room. Most cosmetic plastic surgery is decidedly old school in that we use the same basic instruments and surgical approaches now as when I started in private practice 25 years ago. Certainly, there have been important technique advances that I have adopted to keep current and provide optimal care, but nothing like the paradigm shifting changes in other branches of medicine. Someday there will be a magic wand to make us look better, but for now, it is just down to the care and craftsmanship we provide to our patients.
That said, I am sure my colleagues in academia are researching ways to leverage the advances of AI to improve how we plastic surgeons do things and I will keep reading the journals and going to meetings to keep pace. I did ask Chat GPT to generate an image of a surgeon working on a nose and this was its first try – pretty good.
