Web Log – February 2024 – Diet Drugs and Surgery

Diet drugs like Wegovy, Mounjaro, and other GLP-1 receptor agonists are leading to great weight loss and patients are presenting for surgeries like abdominoplasty.  These drugs cause the stomach to not empty as well, so anesthetists are advising that daily doses of these medications a withheld the day of surgery and that weekly dosed drugs are withheld the week prior to surgery.  As before Phentermine works differently and may affect the heart rhythm.  It should be withheld for two weeks before and after surgery.
