Sometimes, a speaker at a plastic surgery meeting will present a thought or concept that I was already embracing, but phrase it in better, more relatable way. One of my thoughts from my most recent meeting in San Diego was, “the truth is complicated.” I spend a lot of time with patients during consults and pre operative consent. The concept of what plastic surgery offers seem simple enough – bigger breasts, a slimmer nose, or a more youthful appearance. But understanding the patient’s expectations and explaining the risk, benefits, and alternatives of each operation requires time. This process can’t be rushed. A simple sound bite discussion does not fully capture the complexity of surgery. So bear with me as I make it more complicated that it seems like it should be. I think it’s worth it for such a large physical, emotional, and financial investment in yourself.
