About Plastic Surgery
The Specialty
Plastic Surgery is a surgical subspecialty which is recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. The specialty is not defined so much by a particular anatomic region or disease process as by a collection of specialized surgical techniques and rational approach to surgical problem solving. Accordingly, Plastic Surgeons are often consulted by other surgical specialties to help care for patients with difficult problems. A surgeon completely competent in these Reconstructive techniques is then technically, mentally, and ethically ready to apply his or her skills to Cosmetic Surgery Patients.
Surgeons who are Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery have endured a rigorous course of training and testing preparing them to deliver optimal care in the field. This process, which takes many years to complete, cannot be duplicated outside formal residency and fellowship training. Surgeons who are Members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons must maintain strict professional, ethical, and continuing education standards throughout their careers. Mark D. Wigod, MD, FACS, of Meridian, Idaho is Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is a Member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
